As with apples, there are dessert and culinary varieties, but virtually all pears sold are dessert types used for eating fresh when ripe and for cooking while hard.

The naturally high sugar content of pears is useful as a natural sweetener in the beverage industry.

Puree concentrates and juice concentrates can be manufactured to a different Brix if specified in advance by customer.
